Griffith hits ton in 50-over trial
Left-handed opener Trevon Griffith struck a century in Saturday’s third 50-over trial match as Ramaal Lewis XI beat Brandon King XI by four wickets at Kensington Park.
Griffith, the Guyanese batsman who was drafted by the Jamaica Scorpions, made 102 before being dismissed by part-time spinner Andre McCarthy. The 24-year-old faced 133 balls and hit eight fours and two sixes.
His knock lifted Lewis XI to 222-6 after King XI were bowled out for 220.
Scores: King XI 220 (48.4 overs); Lewis XI 222-6 (49.3 overs).
Batting first, King XI were propped up by in-form Jamaica Defence Force batsman Jermaine Harrison, who made 63.
Ramone Francis made 41, while Andre McCarthy struck 35 and King added 29.
Pacers Nicholson Gordon and Christopher Powell grabbed 3-38 and 2-29, respectively, while off-spinner Lewis took 2-37.
In reply, Lewis XI got over the line despite a nervous ending to the run-chase.
Griffith, though failing in Wednesday’s opening trial game at Sabina Park, has been good with the bat since. He carved out a knock of 92 on Thursday in the second encounter at Sabina before reaching the milestone yesterday.
His 91-run third-wicket stand with Aldaine Thomas (46) formed the backbone of the innings.
Former Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert, who made a half-century in the previous game, chipped in with 29.
After 40 overs, Lewis XI were 200-2, but McCarthy ensured a nervous ending with figures of 3-13 off seven overs.
Griffith told the
Jamaica Observer he was pleased with his effort.
“I’m really happy about the way I played. I feel I constructed my innings professionally and rotated the strike well enough. And I’m happy with how I handled the middle overs, but towards the end I could have got more singles,” he said.
“The players could have approached it better at the end, but that’s the nature of the game. We just have to do better next time,” he said, referring to the batting collapse near the end.
The trial matches, a second scheduled for yesterday, are geared at helping the selection committee pick the squad for the regional Super50 tournament, scheduled for January.
