KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica Public Service (JPS) customers will see another reduction in their fuel rate this month, as the company passes on savings from reduced fuel prices on the world market and improved efficiencies in the company’s operations.  

In a press release today, JPS said: “This month, customers will see a 2.36 per cent decrease in bills, as the Fuel & IPP Charge on bills for December is $11.83 per kilowatt hour (kWh), compared to the charge of $12.49 per kWh, which was applied to November bills.” 

The release added that the total cost per kWh of electricity is now 22 US cents or J$26.38. 

JPS explained that a customer who consistently uses 165 kWh per month would be paying $107.14 less for his bill this month, compared to what he paid last month. This customer will pay $4,434.96 for 165 kWh of electricity, as against $4,545.11 that was paid in November for the same usage. 

“The overall cost of electricity has been steadily decreasing over the last 12 months. In December 2014, the cost per kWh stood at J$36.87, which means that rates have fallen by roughly 30 per cent over the period,” the release said.

However, they noted that the fuel charge on electricity bills changes each month and is dependent on the cost of the oil that JPS and other power-generating companies buy to produce electricity.
