No bail for man accused of attempting to steal motor car
A man, who allegedly conspired with another man in an attempt to steal a motor car, was denied bail last week when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The accused, Cheddy-Jez Chambers, was remanded by Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey after she was informed that he had recently completed an 18-month sentence for receiving a stolen car.
The court heard that on the day in question, Chambers drove a car with another man to a location along South Camp Road in Kingston. The passenger allegedly exited the car and went towards another car, which he attempted to steal, but was spotted and ran and escaped while Chambers drove away.
The court further heard that a witness gave the licence plate number on the car Chambers was driving to the police. Chambers was later held on Hagley Park Road.
The accused was subsequently charged with larceny of a motor car and conspiracy with a person unknown to commit larceny of a motor car.
But Chambers’ attorney, Patrick Bailey, told RM Pusey that his client was not involved in the attempt to steal the car.
“When the car was being driven he had no idea that the man was going to do anything criminal,” Bailey said.
He, however, informed the magistrate that Chambers was previously convicted for receiving a stolen motor car. Chambers, when asked how long ago was his sentence, told the magistrate that he had recently finish serving the sentence.
“He just came out and he is right back in business,” RM Pusey said, while pointing it out that there is a new trend where people drive around in a car looking for others to steal and when they are unsuccessful they continue driving until they find another one to ‘pounce on’.
Following that, she told Bailey, “I can’t accede to your request for bail. He is recently out of prison and he is out back doing the same thing. Giving him bail might be inviting him to continue”.S
Chambers was subsequently remanded and is scheduled to return to court on January 5 next year.
