Most improved rider award serves as strong motivation
In-form jockey Robert ‘Hollow Point’ Halledeen, who was voted as the most improved rider last season, said that he was happy for the award and that he will continue to do the necessary hard work to remain on top.
Halledeen rode 72 winners, 61 seconds and 56 thirds from 379 rides in 2015 to finish second in the jockeys’ championship behind Shane Ellis, who finished on 83 winners.
The previous year, Halledeen could only manage 32 winners from 192 rides and was placed sixth in the jockeys’ standing.
“Well, it is good feeling as I got an award for my hard work and dedication to the sport. Things like these only motivate me to do even better. I must thank everyone for their input and their continuous support,” Halledeen said.
Last season was by far the best one so far for Halledeen as he accomplished a lot while in the saddle. He was able to ride his first Classic winner when he guided the Wayne DaCosta-trained
Ali Baba to victory in the 2,000 Guineas. Halledeen was also able to win the Caribbean Sprint Championship aboardPoker Star as well as the Governor General’s Stakes, Prime Minister’s Stakes and Gold Cup aboardPerfect Neighbour.
“Last season was the best one that I ever had since starting my career back in 2009. It is the first season that I actually rode right through, and during that time I was able to accomplish some goals. I won my first Classic race and the feeling was extremely great and one that I will cherish for a very long time,” Halledeen told The Complete Racing Guide.
“I also achieved more as I won a lot of Grade One races, trophy races and more. I had a very wonderful time last season and I must thank the main person, trainer Wayne DaCosta, who really highlighted my talent,” he continued.
As to his chances of becoming champion jockey, Halledeen feels that this goal is not beyond him.
“I am riding well at the moment and my aim is to win races. It would be great to be called a champion. If the championship comes my way, then why not challenge for it?” he ended.
