Two arrested over $1.9-million tax arrears
TAX Administration Jamaica (TAJ) says two Clarendon residents were recently arrested and brought before the May Pen Resident Magistrate’s Court for failing to pay outstanding property taxes of just more than $1.9 million
A TAJ release yesterday named the two as Winston Delano Willis and Charles Apru Darby, who were both arrested on warrants of disobedience for failure to pay property taxes. Willis owed $532,122.54 and Darby $1,375,325.55. Both were granted bail.
According to the TAJ, the tax authority’s Special Enforcement Team was supported by the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency in the operation that led to the arrest of the the Clarendon residents.
“[We] continue to carry out enforcement activities to ensure the protection of the revenue. Taxpayers are, therefore, encouraged to speak with the tax authority to make suitable arrangements if they are faced with difficulties in honouring their tax obligations, particularly where a judgement has been handed down by the court. Failure to comply with a court order will result in enforcement action by the Special Enforcement Team to seek warrants of disobedience,” said the TAJ release.
