Students take spotlight at Evoke on Saturday
EVOKE, a fashion show aimed at exposing the talent of young designers, is scheduled for Whitebones Seafood Restaurant on Mannings Hill Road in Kingston tomorrow at 7:00 pm.
Organiser and principal of Liquid Gold Modelling Agency, Jaime Rose, shared his vision for the event.
“We’ll be exposing 10 designers from the Garmex HEART Academy, UTech (University of Technology), and Edna Manley (College of the Visual and Peforming Arts),” Rose, 53, told Splash.
“It is a great opportunity for students to showcase their designs, network with store and gift shop owners, and get advice and, perhaps, sell some of their items. It’s a good platform for the students,” he continued.
Rose said he hopes to jump start the declining clothing-making sector.
“I’m from a neighbourhood in Portland where seamstresses and tailors were an integral part of the economy. That sector is now dying as everyone is purchasing imported clothing. With this sector active like previous years, it could create employment and save the country whole heap of foreign exchange,” he said.
A former insurance salesman and teacher, the dimunitive Rose started Liquid Gold Modelling Agency in 2007. He, however, came up with the idea to showcase the students’ work last year.
“I had students from one institution at a time. However, this year, I thought the more we could expose the better it is,” he said.
The make-up will be provided by students from D’Marie School of Makeup Artistry.
