STETHS look set to retain titles at Western Champs

CATHERINE HALL, St James — St Elizabeth Technical High School’s (STETHS) Nigel Ellis blazed his way to a personal best 10.20 seconds (1.9m/s) time to retain his Class One boys’ 100m title at the Digicel/County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s Western Championships finals held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex yesterday.

Ellis was one of three boys who won sprint doubles as all four girls who won the 100m also went on to take the 200m titles as well.

Seven records were broken up to press time yesterday with STETHS’s Junelle Bromfield also in record-breaking form as she smashed two records in the Class One 400m and 800m events.

Showing a class far above the rest of the field, Ellis smashed the record 10.32 seconds set in 2013 by Munro College’s Delano Williams with Cornwall College’s Mathew Brown well back in a personal best 10.73 seconds, and STETHS’s Marquis Jones third in 10.77 seconds.

Ellis won the 200 in 201.40 seconds just missing Usain Bolt’s 20.20 seconds set in 2003 with teammate Hujaye Cornwall second in 20.98 seconds and Herbert Morrison’s Jordane Jackson third in 21.32 seconds.

Bromfield, the Commonwealth Youth Games 400m/400m hurdles double gold medallist last year first clocked 2 minutes 07.37 seconds to win the 800m, beating the old 2:13.53 seconds set in 2014 by her former teammate Chantai Smith.

Later she returned in the 400m to clock 52.43 seconds, lowering the 54.49 seconds set two years ago by Dawnalee Loney of Balaclava High.

Cornwall College’s Alrick Ottey smashed the 15.17m in the Class One boys’ triple jump with a monster 15.69m to add to the long jump title he won on Thursday.

Winsome Harris, also of STETHS, is the new record holder in the girls’ Class Three 80m hurdles after she clocked 11.64 seconds to beat the 11.66 seconds set in 2005 by Mt Alvernia High’s Yushanni Durrant.

Munro Colege’s Devante Haywood ran 52.81 seconds to set the new mark in the Class Four 400m event, under the 54.14 seconds set last year by Petersfield’s Antonio Watson.

Watson, who won three events, made sure his name would stay in the record sheet after he ran 50.82 seconds to win the Class Three quarter mile, breaking the 11-year-old record of 50.87 seconds set by Manning’s School’s Darrion Bent.

Earlier he threw 13.23m to win the Class Three shot put on Thursday, breaking the 12.77 set by Stevon Crooks of Petersfield in 2010, and also won the 800m yesterday.

Meanwhile, the sprint double champions were Green Island’s Jaciann Woolery in the Class Four girls, Spot Valley High’s Leyone Smith in girls’ Class Three, Mt Alvernia High’s Kemba Nelson in Class Two, and Green Island’s Vanesha Pusey in girls’ Class One.

In addition to Ellis of STETHS in the boys’ Class One, other double winners were STETHS’s Sachin Dennis in Class Three and Petersfield’s Kevon Stone.

Defending champions STETHS, meanwhile, were leading in both sections and well on their way to retaining their titles.

After 36 events, STETHS had scored 258 points, leading Rusea’s High on 236, Petersfield on 130, Mt Alvernia High on 87.5 and Green Pond on 83.5 in the top five.

In the boys’ section, STETHS were on 260.5 points after 31 events scored, followed by Munro College on 188.5, Herbert Morrison with 155, Petersfield on 149 and Cornwall College on 99.5.
