WATCH: Swaby hails 2026 Carnival a major success despite shooting incident

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby has lauded the 2026 Carnival season as a “resounding success” driving economic activity across various sectors, despite a shooting incident at the Big Wall carnival party on Sunday.

“Once again, the event has proven to be a resounding success. It continues to demonstrate its growing economic importance to the city, driving activity across multiple sectors and bringing vibrancy to our urban space. I commend the bands, the organisers, the patrons who all contributed to the success of the event,” Swaby said.

The mayor said the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) was engaged from the outset, working closely with stakeholders to support the planning, logistics and coordination required to ensure smooth execution. He said this year’s carnival experience stands as a clear example of what can be achieved through collaboration, strategic planning and a shared commitment to excellence.

Additionally, Swaby noted that there was marked improvement in waste management and disposal.

“Reports indicated that streets were cleared efficiently following the road march, minimising environmental impact and restoring normalcy in record time. This is a significant achievement and a testament to the dedication of the teams involved. Counselors, we were so determined to get it right, or at least to minimise unwanted outcomes. In doing so, we tested samples of paint used during the various activities to ensure that they could be easily removed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Swaby condemned the shooting incident at the Big Wall Carnival event which left three individuals, including a bystander, nursing gunshot wounds.

The incident reportedly involved producer Jahvy Ambassador, members of artiste 450’s camp and popular podcaster Jaii Frais.

“We unequivocally condemn all acts of violence and extend our best wishes for the full recovery of those who were injured during the incident,” he said.
