A construction worker appeared in court last Thursday on allegations that he sold a man’s motor car, two days after it was rented to a woman.

Dwayne Johnson of North Avenue in Kingston, who is charged with larceny of a motor car and conspiracy to larceny of a motor car, was denied bail.

The court heard that, on January 14, the complainant rented his 2003 Honda Civic motor car to a woman for five days.

On January 15, an advertisement was reportedly placed in a daily newspaper advertising the car for sale at a price of $620,000.

On the following day, the accused reportedly sold the car for $610,000 and gave the person a receipt and a certificate of title, which was written on a stolen document from the tax office.

The court heard further that on January 23, the owner tracked his vehicle to a car mart on Hagley Park Road in Kingston, after the woman to whom he had rented the vehicle had failed to return it.

The complainant reportedly went to the car mart with the police and was reportedly informed by the car mart’s owner that Henry had sold him the car.

As it relates to the woman, the court was informed that the police were clueless about her whereabouts and that she is wanted for questioning in three similar cases.

Attorney Robert Moore, who sought bail for Johnson, told RM Judith Pusey that his client had no previous conviction and that he would return to court if granted bail.

But the magistrate told the lawyer that she found it surprising that the police were not objecting to bail and that she could not grant Johnson bail.

“It is likely that he will reoffend and he is part of a serious conspiracy,” she said before remanding him in custody until March 2.
