Scorpions won’t take Hurricanes lightly – Bennett
Jamaica Scorpions Head Coach Junior Bennett says his team will not be complacent when they oppose Leeward Islands Hurricanes upon the resumption of the Professional Cricket League four-day competition.
The Scorpions, who departed the island for Antigua yesterday, are third in the six-team table with 53 points from five matches, while last-placed Leeward Islands Hurricanes have 13.
The game is scheduled to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, starting on Friday.
“We have to just go out and play to the best of our ability. We can’t pay too much attention to where they are in the table because they are doing far better than their placing suggests at the moment,” Bennett said shortly before the squad’s departure.
The four-day competition was on a break since December, which allowed for the playing of the Regional Super50 tournament in January.
The veteran coach said he hopes that the break would have given batsmen the chance to work on their game. He added that there were positives during preparation.
“The break afforded us time to do work with the players and we just need to go out and execute in the second stage of the tournament.
“Well, we hope that the batting turns up for the rest of the tournament. They did well in the recent practice match and that should give them confidence. I believe the bowlers have been bowling well enough throughout the tournament so far, so that’s not a major concern.
“It’s important we get 12 points with a win and we want some bonus points as well. Once we get some good totals in the first innings we will be getting batting points,” Bennett explained.
Guyana Jaguars, the defending regional four-day champions, are top of the standing with 85 points. Barbados Pride follow with 63 points, while Trinidad & Tobago Red Force (37) are fourth, and Windward Islands Volcanoes (29 points) are fifth.
