Jamaican diver qualifies for Olympics
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Yona Knight-Wisdom says he is still in shock of his historic performances at the FINA Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Knight-Wisdom, competing against a world-class line up, became the first Jamaican male diver to qualify for the Olympics, after he scored 397 in the three-metre springboard dive in the preliminaries.
But the 20-year-old made an even bigger splash in the finals to claim silver, which was the island’s first-ever World Champs diving medal.
“I’m still in shock about the events of the final as I was able to finish ahead of so many top quality divers, and people I have looked up to for so many years,” the Leeds diver told OBSERVER ONLINE on Tuesday.
“It is just beginning to sink in how much of an achievement this is for the whole country of Jamaica,” he added.
