American Girl gives nod to Black History Month
Yet another doll company makes a move for diversity, but this time it’s American Girl taking a step towards the now, by giving a nod to the past.
Calls for more diversity, not just in media and television, apparently have not fallen on deaf ears. Barbie has recently rolled out a new line of dolls that feature varied skin tones, ethnicities and body types (whew!) and American Girl has just recently added their third African-American doll to their BeForever line.
But that’s not all. One of the dolls, Melody Ellison (the newest American Girl), is a nine year old living in 1960s Detroit where Motown is changing music and Martin Luther King Jr. is changing the social scene.
And in Melody’s stories (not only does the iconic doll company make dolls, they also have books and stories), she uses her voice to advocate for equality and fairness.
A nod to history, civil rights AND cute 60s fashion? We’re SO here for it!
Happy Black History Month, guys! #LoveYourMelanin #LoveTheSkinYoureIn
