CONCACAF Champs: U-17 Reggae Girlz hope for win against Mexico
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — Jamaica’s Under-17 Reggae Girlz will be aiming to end on a high when they close out their Group B campaign in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship against defending champions Mexico at Grenada National Stadium on Tuesday.
Both teams are scheduled to meet at 3:30 pm (2:30 pm Jamaica time), after front-runners USA battle Costa Rica in the curtain-raiser at 1:00 pm (12:00 noon Jamaica time).
Jamaica remain at the foot of the four-team standing and will be seeking their first point of the tournament following their 8-1 drubbing by powerhouse USA on Friday and a 2-3 loss to Costa Rica on Sunday. The United States head the table on six points and have secured a spot in the semi-finals, while Costa Rica and Mexico are on three points each.
Assistant coach Xavier Gilbert explained that they are still looking at a number of possibilities for the starting team.
“We plan to get some fresh legs in so as to ensure that all of the girls get some minutes, so we are going to introduce a few of them who haven’t played as yet and hopefully we can come out with a positive result. We didn’t want to leave here empty-handed, unfortunately things haven’t been going our way so far and we also have a few niggling injuries that we are looking to manage to ensure that we remain competitive,” said Gilbert
However, Sydney Schneider (Pennsylvania) is again expected to start in goal. Canadian-based Maya Swaby-Wallerson, Madiya Harriott (Florida) and Shanhaine Nelson look set to join Captain Rachel Walters in defence.
Emily Caza (Canada), Sherice Clarke and Tarania Clarke could marshal the midfield, while Dominique Moxie (Atlanta) and Marlee Fray and Jody Brown could be in the attack.
Even though it is far-fetched, the young Reggae Girlz still stand a very thin chance of making the semi-finals, but in order to do so, they will have to defeat the Mexicans by nine clear goals.
