Fire leaves four homeless in Central Kingston
A family of four was left homeless yesterday after fire destroyed a four-bedroom wooden house on Barry Street in Parade Garden, Central Kingston.
No one was injured in the blaze, which was put out by a unit from the York Park fire station.
One of the victims, Sandra Fletcher — who shared the dwelling with her sister, daughter and a man — said that she only managed to save two passports from the blaze.
“I was at my daughter’s school when I got a call that my house was on fire. When I came the fire was just in the kitchen. When the firefighters came and kicked off the door mi could only run in and retrieve the two passports. My daughter’s passport and mine… those were the only things I retrieved,” Fletcher told the
Jamaica Observer.
“I lost everything, but I have life. When the firefighters came, everything was flat,” Fletcher shared.
Meanwhile, one resident took issue with the length of time it took the firefighters to respond.
“If the fireman did come early they could have saved something. The resident went to the Gold Street Police Station and made a report. One hour before dem come. By the time dem come, a cooling down. Imagine the little girl deh a school and she affi come home wid di one uniform,” complained the resident, who gave her name only as Patsy.
