Most Mexicans wary of Trump presidency
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AFP) – Nearly two-thirds of Mexicans feel that if Donald Trump is elected his presidency will harm their country, an opinion poll showed Wednesday.
The survey by pollsters GEA-ISA found that 61 per cent have a negative opinion of the front-runner for the Republican nomination, who has angered Mexicans by calling migrants rapists and vowing to make Mexico pay for a giant wall he has proposed building along the border.
Nine percent have a positive opinion of Trump while 18 per cent are indifferent.
The poll also found that 65 per cent believe that his presidency would hurt Mexico.
By comparison, 58 per cent have a positive opinion of the Democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton.
“There is a deep rejection of Donald Trump,” said GEA director Guillermo Valdes.
The real estate tycoon is well-known in Mexico, with 88 per cent saying they are familiar with him while Clinton is known to 85 percent of Mexicans.
The national poll was conducted among 990 people between March 5-8. It has a 3.1 percentage point margin of error.
