Mexico to restrict shrimp harvesting in C’bbean Sea
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CMC) — The National Committee for Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNPA) has agreed to set starting and closing dates for the closure of shrimp species capture, for this year, for areas in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
Yesterday, the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries said the decision was made based on the scientific information presented by the National Fisheries Institute and the concerns and opinions of the productive sector and other agents related to the shrimp fishery.
The CNPA said the ban will come into effect on May 1.
In addition, the committee also announced a period of permanent closure for the capture of all shrimp species in the marine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea included in the marine area of 0 to 15 nautical miles from the coastline was reiterated, from Isla Aguada, Campeche, to the border with Belice, including lagoons and coastal areas in the Yucatan peninsula, except for Contoy fishing grounds.
