Commonwealth secretary-general meets House speaker
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The first female secretary-general of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland, on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on Pearnel Charles, speaker of the House of Representatives.
During their meeting, Charles and the secretary-general discussed the issues of sustainable development and climate change, improving trade among Commonwealth nations, and Commonwealth cooperation in areas such as health and youth development.
Charles pledged the Jamaican Parliament’s support to the secretary-general in her efforts to foster greater cooperation within the Commonwealth.
Scotland, who is Dominican born, is on a two-day visit to Jamaica.
She assumed office on April 1, 2016 and is the second Caribbean national to serve as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
