GC Foster College make history at 122nd Penn Relays
It was a historic 122nd Penn Relays for the Maurice Wilson-coached GC Foster College as they posted two wins, including the marquee College Men’s Championships of Americas Invitational 4x100m.
It was the first time any GC Foster team was winning at the prestigious event and they join the University of Technology, Jamaica and University of the West Indies, (UWI), Mona as Jamaican tertiary institutions to have victories at the event.
They also won the IC4A 4x200m finals, while UWI Mona’s Fredrick Dacres, the world’s number two ranked thrower, set a new College Men’s discus throw record of 65.19m.
The GC Foster 4x100m team of Colin King, Chadric Hinds, Everton Clark and Brandon Tomlinson ran 39.31 seconds to beat the University of Houston with 39.49 seconds and South Carolina with 39.54 seconds.
UTech, with Jonathan Farinha, Chad Walker, Rohan Cole and Tyquendo Tracey, were fifth in 39.73 seconds.
The GC Foster team of Romario Willams, Colin King, Everton Clarke and Vashan Grant ran 1 minute 23.60 seconds to win the IC4A 4x200m.
UTech were fourth in the Championship of America 4x200m relay in 1 minute 23.24 seconds.
Dacres, who held the world lead in the discus a week earlier, threw 65.19m to break the one-year-old mark of 65.04m set by Louisiana State University’s Rodney Brown.
Traves Smikle, also of UWI Mona, was second with 63.42m, while another UWI Mona athlete, Basil Bingham, was second in the Men’s College event with 53.89m.
Dacres was also second in the shot put last Friday with 18.53m.
Former National Junior Record holder Kellion Knibb, throwing for Florida State University, broke the meet record in the women’s discus throw, winning with 58.55m, beating the Penn Relays and Franklin Field record 57.78m, set 20 years ago in 1996 by University of Washington’s Aretha Hill.
The record and winning throw came in the final round, lifting Knibb past Maryland’s Chioma Onyekwere who was second with 53.02m
UTech’s Genneva Greaves was sixth with 47.46m and fourth in the Women’s College shot put event with 14.47m.
UTech’s Damar Whyte won the College men’s long jump with 7.18m, followed by GC Foster’s Aubrey Allen in second place with 7.13m.
In other events, GC Foster were also third in the Championship of America men’s 4x400m, with the team of Morzel Miller (47.8), Remish Gaye (45.9), Alvin Green (47.46), Nascieve Powell (47.05) running 3 minutes 08.19 seconds.
UTech took fourth in the college race with Travane Morrison, Marvin Williams, Twayne Crooks and Herbert Thomas running 3:10.17 minutes.
The UTech women were second in 4x200m Championship of America with Christania Williams, Janieve Russell, Shimayra Williams, Shericka Jackson running 1:32.69 minutes.
They also took third in the 4×400 Championship of America with 3:30.75 minutes with the team of Simoya Campbell (54.7), Shericka Jackson (51.6), Derri-Ann Hill (53.02), and Janieve Russell (51.38).
Shimayra Williams was second in the women’s 100m dash in 11.54 seconds (-1.0m/s), while her teammate Ajamu Graham was fifth in the college men’s 100m dash in 10.52 seconds (-1.0m/s).
GC Foster’s Andre Clarke was second in the College men’s 400m hurdles in 51.44 seconds, followed by former high school champion UTech’s Marvin Williams (51.74 seconds) and GC Foster’s Marzel Miller in fourth in 52.57 seconds.
UTech’s Megan Simmonds was second in the 100m hurdles in 13.24 seconds (-0.7m/s), while defending champion Rushell Clayton of UWI Mona was third in the College Women’s 400m hurdles in 57.01 seconds.
