TAJ refunds overpayment due to online glitch
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) says that several taxpayers who were recently impacted by the online system error, which occurred April 27-28, resulting in Property Tax and Traffic Ticket payment duplications, have had these overpayments refunded. According to the TAJ, once it was confirmed that there were multiple payments, the amounts were reversed to the customer’s credit card.
“To date, of the 487 affected transactions identified over 380 have been corrected,” TAJ said in a statement Friday, adding that work is continuing to address the others shortly.
TAJ said that the procedure to remedy this issue was quite complex and required a manual review of the logs of the affected period.
Taxpayers are therefore being advised that their refunds may not be done in one transaction and will take 48 hours after the reversal has been effected to reflect on their credit card accounts.
On completion of this exercise all taxpayer accounts will be updated. This service disruption is being treated with the highest priority and every effort is being made to have this settled as quickly and accurately as possible, TAJ said.
Individuals may contact the TAJ Customer Care Centre at 1-888-Tax-Help (1-888-829-43571-888-829-4357 FREE) toll-free for further information or assistance, the tax collecting agency said.
