Preparing for tough interview questions — Part 2
Last week, based on space constraints, a few suggestions for our reader Melissa F were reserved for publication this week.
Here are three other potentially challenging interview questions and possible approaches that could be taken.
1. Tell us about a time when you were participating in a team project and somebody dropped the ball. What did you do to help the team finish the project on time?
This is an opportunity for you to highlight key skills that the employer will be looking for, including initiative, resourcefulness, time management, leadership, and commitment to task. While you should focus on your specific response to the situation, be sure to affirm the positive response of the other members of the team as well.
2. How long can we expect you to work for us if you are hired?
Avoid clichéd responses such as ‘until I retire’, unless you can reasonably project a possible career path within the organiation. Your response could instead hint at your desire to provide excellent service, and therefore you will remain as long as both you and the employer are satisfied with your performance.
3. Suppose I should tell you that this interview is not going well…?
This question is intended to be disconcerting. The interviewer is trying to see how you respond to pressure, your ability for self-assessment, and how well you are able to ‘think on your feet’. Note, the interviewer has not said it is not going well. You could ask if there is a specific part of the interview that is of concern and respond accordingly.
Use this as an opportunity to show that you have a clear understanding of the job requirements. Re-iterate how the competencies and experience you bring are a good match, and how your specific contributions will aid in advancing the organisation’s goals.
Final tip
Always identify beforehand your top three or four skills, competencies or abilities that will be a good match for the job and try to focus each of your responses to demonstrate how you are best suited.
All the best in your interviews.
Sincerely,
