Maverley/Hughenden held 1-1 by Brazil
Eastern Confederation champions Brazil FC scored late to earn a 1-1 result against Maverley/Hughenden in the Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Premier League play-offs at Maverley/Hughenden Sports Complex yesterday.
Rohan Williams sent Marverley/Hughenden in front in the 49th minute, but Pecheeko Green (90+1) ensured Brazil a point.
Maverley/Hughenden inched up to four points, while Brazil gained their first point from two games.
Despite the draw, Maverley/Hughenden — the KSAFA Super League champions — remain in contention to secure one of the two promotion places to next season’s Red Stripe Premier League.
After playing out a lukewarm first half, which ended goalless, the hosts grabbed the ascendancy four minutes after the resumption, when Williams got on the end of a loose ball and slotted home from close range.
They continued to dictate terms as they dominated possession which, saw them squandering numerous chances.
Brazil made them pay for their profligacy in front of goal when Green expertly headed in from a well-weighted left side free kick from his brother Daniel Green.
Hugh “Bingy” Blair, coach of Marverley/Hughenden, lamented his team’s lack of composure in front of goal.
“The performance wasn’t too nice in the first half, we came out in the second half and played a much better game, but we got confused in the last 10 minutes. So we have to work on our problem in the defence and midfield. The chances came and we [were] not finishing,” Blair told journalists in a post-game interview.
His counterpart Kirk Ramsey had a different outlook.
“We put up a gutsy performance. The youngsters told me that they would come here for all three points, but if they can’t get three they would take one and move forward. So this is a stepping stone for us,” he explained.
