Revelations, Somerton meet in St James Division One semis
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Revelations FC and Somerton FC will meet in the first-leg semifinals of the St James Football Association Sandals/ATL Division One semi-finals at the UDC field this afternoon, starting at 3:30 pm.
Three points separated the two teams at the end of the three rounds of matches, and the team will be meeting for the first time this season, after Somerton FC forfeited their third-round game.
If the statistics are to be a guide, the game promises to be close as very little separated the teams, with Somerton FC marginally ahead with 11 wins to 10, 35 goals scored to 34 and 15 goals conceded to 18.
Sebastian Robinson has been a faithful servant for Revelation FC for a number of years and his goals have always helped in deciding their fate.
This season he led the team with 13 goals and could be the man to lead the attack against the best defence in the competition.
Meanwhile, in the other semi-final tie, long shots Club Stars sprung a surprise after they battled to a 3-3 draw with promotion favourites, Salt Spring United in the first leg at the UDC field on Thursday afternoon.
Rushane Williams, who started as goalkeeper for most of the season, led Club Stars with a first-half double — as they led 2-1 at half-time — but had to come from behind to earn the draw going into next week’s return leg.
Salt Spring United went into the game as big favourites, after beating Cub Stars twice and led the points tables after the regular season, but were forced to fight in the match as Club Stars took the game to them from the start.
Salt Spring can only blame themselves for not winning the game, as Rushoye Bull missed badly from the penalty spot, which would have tied up the scores.
Williams gave Club Stars the surprise lead in the 18th-minute, but Lavario Whyte equalised for Salt Spring United with a well-placed header in the 24th minute, shortly after Bull placed his penalty kick high over the bar.
Williams bulled his way through the Salt Spring United defence to restore his team’s lead in the 44th minute.
Dave Lee pulled Salt Spring United back level in the 54th minute when he converted a penalty kick low on the left side and out of reach of the Club Stars goalkeeper.
Teenager Andre Allen then gave Salt Spring United the lead for the first time in the game in the 69th minute, with a composed finish from just inside the 18-yard area.
Club Stars would not be denied, however, as Jamal Johnson got the equaliser in the 78th minute setting up a winner-takes-all return leg next Thursday.
