Jamaica’s Christine Day achieved her seasonal best of 51.09 seconds by finishing second place in the 400m and was the best-placed of five Jamaicans at the Birmingham Diamond League yesterday.

Day ran a steady race from lane three and went past Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain on the back stretch quite easily, but just failed to peg back Floria Gueï of France, who won in a personal best of 50.84 seconds. Morgan Mitchell of Australia finished fast into third with 51.25 seconds, while Ohuruogu, the 2008 Olympic champion, cantered home in seventh spot with 52.40 seconds.

Day, 29, who led off Jamaica’s gold medal-winning 4x400m relay team at the Beijing World Championships last year, is now the fourth-fastest Jamaican this season behind Novlene Williams-Mills (50.87), Stephenie McPherson (50.98) and Chrisann Gordon (51.03). Day is ahead of Janieve Russell (51.17), Shericka Jackson (51.34) and Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby (51.40) in what is shaping up to be a very powerful 4x400m relay squad.

Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer finished a disappointing seventh in the 400m hurdles in 55.96 seconds, in a race in which she was never in the hunt, running out of lane two. American Cassandra Tate won the race in 54.57 seconds in a photo finish ahead of Eilidh Doyle of Great Britain, who was credited with the same time. Georganne Moline of the USA was third in 54.63 seconds.

Jamaica’s Kimberly Williams placed fourth in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 14.36m (+2.3) and Shanieka Thomas (+1.3) was seventh with 13.88m. The event was won by Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan in 14.51m (+1.5) and ended Caterine Ibargüen’s 34-event win streak. The Colombian was second with 14.56m (+0.8).

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Simone Facey was sixth in the women’s 100m in 11.24 seconds, running into a headwind of -1.2. The race was won by in-form American English Gardner in 11.02 seconds, ahead of Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers in 11.09. Tianna Bartoletta of the USA closed well for third with 11.11 seconds with Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain fourth in 11.22 seconds.

Earlier, Facey clocked 11.13 seconds for fifth in the heats and was the slowest qualifier into the final. Gardner also won that heat in 11.02 seconds, the same time she ran in the final.
