Ten Interesting Facts about Jamaica College
1. The Jamaica High School was formed by law 34 of 1879 and merged with the Jamaica Free School (formerly Drax Free School) which was located in St Ann
2. The school was temporarily moved to Barbican Great House in January 1883 in anticipation of construction of the new buildings at Hope.
3. Reginald Murray was the first Rhodes Scholar for both Jamaica and Jamaica College in 1904
4. The University College of Jamaica was Jamaica’s first tertiary institution and started in the Simms building in September 1888 but was later housed in the Scotland building in September 1890
5. In 1902 it was merged with the Jamaica High School to become Jamaica College after a law instructing the merger was passed that same year
6. The Simms Building had a fourth level with a domed roof which housed the school’s bell but which was destroyed in the 1907 earthquake
7. JC has produced a Premier in Norman Manley and two Prime Ministers; Michael Manley and Bruce Golding
