Application for Jamaica House fellowship opens Monday

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica House Fellowship Programme will begin accepting applications from qualified candidates to serve as full-time, paid fellows at the Office of the Prime Minister on June 20, the day when the programme’s webpage goes live.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the programme during his recent budget presentation, noting that it is designed to provide the government with the services of some of Jamaica’s most promising young minds and high capacity managers.

“Jamaica will be at its best when its most talented graduates see a career in the public service as among their highest possible ambitions,” said Prime Minister Holness.

Successful candidates will be working under the direct guidance and supervision of the chief technical director in the Office of the Prime Minister and will be involved in a wide range of high impact projects.

Chief Technical Director Jacqueline Lynch-Stewart explained that as part of their responsibilities, fellows will assist in providing analysis and support to aid in decision-making at the highest levels while helping to coordinate and monitor the progress of initiatives across ministries, departments and agencies of government, in a timely and efficient manner.

The fellows will be involved in tasks such as gathering and analyzing data; reviewing costs, benefits and the possible impact of policy options; researching information to support the evaluation of policy options, and designing and implementing government policies, among other activities, she further disclosed.

“Fellows can look forward to acquiring first-hand, high-level exposure and experience in Government, and a sense of personal pride from being involved in the leadership of the country and participating in nation-building,” Lynch-Stewart said.

The programme is designed to empower individuals to make further contributions to their communities and to become greater leaders in their respective fields.

Candidates seeking to participate in the Jamaica House Fellowship Programme must have the following qualifications:

i. At least an undergraduate degree and be working in their chosen field;

ii. A record of outstanding professional achievement in one’s career;

iii. Evidence of leadership skills and achievements;

iv. Excellent oral and written communication skills;

v. Excellent research and organisational skills;

vi. Evidence of a commitment to public/community service;

vii. Strong interpersonal skills – ability to take the initiative and work to meet deadlines;

viii. Capacity for quick learning and willingness to work hard and long hours; and

ix. Evidence of the ability to work as part of a team.

Deadline for the receipt of applications is August 2, 2016. Applications will only be accepted online and the application form can be accessed at www.opm.gov.jm/jamaicahousefellowship.
