Getting ready for the St Leger

…final gallops by the leading contenders

Most of the entries for the 2016 ISP Finance Services Limited-sponsored Jamaica St Leger put in their last gallops on Saturday and Sunday as trainers completed the finishing touches of their preparations for the 90th running of the third jewel in the Triple Crown series of races.

Trainer Lorenzo Robinson’s Mr Doitbetta galloped on Saturday.Dr Doitbetta cantered nine furlongs, galloping the last seven furlongs in 1:28.3 minutes ridden.

On Sunday, two of the fillies entered in the St Leger – A Thousand Stars and Nuclear Affair – went through their paces.A Thousand Stars galloped five and a half furlongs in 1:06.3 minutes, doing the final five furlongs in a very encouraging 59.3 seconds.Nuclear Affair, trained by Gary Subratie with Ameth Robles in the saddle, galloped six furlongs in 1:15.0 minutes.

Of the colts and geldings, Jamai Raja, who should be much more at home going 10 furlongs instead of running the two extra furlongs of the Derby, galloped six furlongs in a time of 1:15.4 minutes.Jamai Raja is trained by Richard Azan.

Will In Charge, fourth in the Derby after a troubled passage, galloped seven furlongs in 1:29.0 minutes. Will In Charge is trained by Robert Pearson.

The Anthony Nunes duo of Bigdaddykool and Orpheus both galloped by themselves, with the former stopping the clock at 1:16.2 minutes for six furlongs.Orpheus had an easy six furlongs ending in a time of 1:18.2 minutes.

Trainer of Future King Wayne DaCosta put the 2,000 Guineas winner through a sharp gallop of five furlongs, withFuture King responding with a time of 1:00.2 minutes.

ST LEGER 2016 WILL BE SPECIAL

Cliff McDonald, marketing manager at ISP Finance Services Limited, sponsors of the 2016 Jamaica St Leger, says his company is doing everything possible to make St Leger Day special for the stakeholders in racing and for racing fans.

‘This is a marquee sponsorship by ISP Finance as the St Leger is the final jewel in the Triple Crown series, with the other races being the Guineas and of course, the Derby.

“ISP has become a vital part of the life of racing by the very special service that we offer, so it was a logical sponsorship for us.

“Our decision to pay purses after the running of each race provides a very quick turnover to all concerned. It is our pledge to racing which we will deliver on,” McDonald said.

The ISP marketing manager further informed that while the interests of those directly involved in the sport of horse racing will be taken care of, racing fans at Caymanas Park will also benefit.

“As announced by our managing director at the recent press conference, the company will have tents set up at Caymanas Park, where our staff members will be advising those interested on the products and services we offer, plus we will be giving the best financial advice to those wanting that particular service.

“It is going to be a great St Leger race day on Saturday next and we are ready to serve. We invite all to come to Caymanas Park and enjoy a great day of racing, fun, and excitement. May the best horse win the 90th running of the ISP Finance Services-sponsored Jamaica St Leger,” McDonald said with conviction.
