Summer reading camps begin tomorrow
Jamaica Intensive Reading Clinic will be staging its islandwide Summer Reading Camp this week — July 25 to 29.
It will feature over 100 volunteers, 35 literacy specialists, reading ambassadors and representatives from the Ministry of Education, Santana Morris, founder and executive director of the clinic told the Jamaica Observer. The camp will be hosted each day from 10:00 am 2:00 pm at the following centres:
• St James — Calvary Baptist Church Educational Centre, Montego Bay
• Clarendon — Clarendon Youth and Empowerment Centre
• Kingston and St Andrew

• St Catherine
a. Linstead Baptist Church Educational Centre
b. Greater Portmore Baptist Educational Centre
c. Phillippo Baptist Educational Centre
• St Mary — Beecham Hill Primary School

b. PDL Academy for Excellence
c. Muirhouse Primary and Junior High
Each centre will be staffed with volunteers and at least one reading specialist, Morris said. At the end of the camp it is hoped that participants will be more cognisant of:
· Word recognition
· Word usage
· Phonological awareness
· Reading fluency
· Reading strategies
· Comprehension skills
