KINGSTON, Jamaica — The defence in the Steven Causewell murder case this morning made submissions for the trial to be stayed in the Home Circuit Court.

Causwell, a Kingston businessman, is being tried for the 2008 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Nordia Mitchell, at her Oakland apartment in Kingston.

Queens Counsel Jacqueline Samuels-Brown, who is representing the defendant, is asking the court to abort the matter based on the prosecution’s decision not to call two doctors who were listed on the indictment as witnesses; the disappearance of four cellular phones that were exhibits in the matter, and the prosecution’s failure to put forward the phone records of the deceased and Causewell that were extracted from their phones.

Samuels Brown argued that the prosecution’s failure to make the cell phones available to the defence or to account for their disappearance would result in an unfair trial.

Director of Public Prosecution Paula Llewellyn is now responding to the defence’s submission.
