SUMMARY:
Getting Things Done is a productivity manual that aims to educate the reader on the world-renowned ‘Getting Things Done’ (GTD) time-management method designed by New York Times bestselling author David Allen. Based on the premise that productivity is directly proportional to the ability to relax, the book seeks to convince the reader that the GTD method will decrease one’s stress level, which, in turn, will increase one’s level of productivity.
Allen divides the book into three sections. The first is titled: “The Art of Getting Things Done”. It is here that he introduces the backbone of the GTD method.
He explains that one must identify the work to be done, figure out what the next steps are to complete the task, and prioritise. This first chapter also explains the reason millions of people constantly complain that they cannot keep up with their workload and become stressed out — stress — and points out common errors in our attempts to be productive.
The second section is titled “Practicing Stress-Free Productivity”. Here, Allen holds the reader’s hand and guides him through decluttering life from the inside out. It involves ridding the mind of stressful thoughts as well as clearing and organising the physical surroundings. He walks the reader through the type of stationery required, as well as the furniture to be utilised.
The third section is called: “The Power of Key Principles”. In this section, Allen invites the reader to visualise the success he will have in both personal and professional life from following the GTD method. This is also where he affords the reader a further path to mastering the method. This section is also filled with encouragement to follow one’s goals and aspirations.
Getting Things Done is sprinkled with summaries of important points and motivational quotes by successful people on almost every page.
WHY IT’S WORTH READING:
David Allen has taken on the brave task of attempting to solve a problem that has plagued modern society; our inefficiency in completing work, whether personal or professional. Not only has he suggested a fully detailed method, he guides the reader through it. Allen has described every scenario and excuse that people often tell others and themselves as to why they can’t get the job done. He teaches you how to utilise your time, whether you have tonnes of it or two-minute breaks, to knock things off your list.
One of the most interesting things he mentions is that the brain is great at generating ideas but doesn’t do a great job of storing them or retrieving them at the right times. Therefore, he teaches mastering the art of capturing all your ideas. The best thing about this book is that you don’t actually have to follow every little detail to see real improvement in your life. If you grasp at least one habit, you will notice that you are less stressed and have a clearer mind, which are blessings chased by many.
The book was written for professionals, especially those juggling traditional 9-5 jobs along with a spouse and children. However, it will be of use to college students, teenagers, just about anyone who has too much on their mind, is stressed, unproductive and procrastinates way too much.
Finally, this book makes a very important point, which is that if you aren’t in control of your life you will lack the motivation, self-confidence and time to achieve all your goals. After reading this book you will make a positive change in some way.
