KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – Jamaica and its outstanding athletes are being hailed by world leaders at the Olympics Games, being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In a recorded message sent from Brazil, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange said that Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who is also in Brazil, was commended after Usain Bolt’s scintillating victory in the 100 metres last night at the Maracana Stadium.

Bolt won the race in 9.81 seconds, completing a historic three-peat.

“Usain Bolt has made Jamaica so proud. In fact, world leaders rushed to congratulate and embrace (Prime Minister Holness) on the success that Jamaica has by the performance of Usain Bolt,” she said.

Minister Grange noted that Bolt “is truly a legend and that his name will be etched in the annals of history”.

“Jamaica will truly honour him for what he has achieved and the fact that he has brought Jamaica centre stage to the world,” she added.

Minister Grange hailed the outstanding performances of Elaine Thompson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won gold and bronze, respectively, in the women’s 100 metres on Saturday.

She also had high praises for Christania Williams, who finished eighth in the race, noting that she has a great future.

Minister Grange said Jamaica is proud of all its athletes in Rio, noting that they are ably representing the country.

“We are happy that you were able to become an Olympian by qualifying in Jamaica to represent our country at the Olympics, and we know that you have done your best,” she said.
