Education minister to address nation today
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator Ruel Reid, is expected to update the country on developments under the Education System Transformation Programme and the ministry’s Modernisation Programme today in a national broadcast.
A news release from the Ministry of Education said Monday that he will also use the broadcast, which will be aired at 8:30 pm on TVJ and at 9:00 pm on CVM, to share his vision for the country’s education system.
The broadcast, which airs days before the beginning of the 2016/2017 school year, comes amidst heightened discussions about the performance of the country’s secondary-level students on the June sitting of external examinations.
Also on the agenda of issues to be discussed is the re-engineering of the ministry.
“Through the re-engineering, the new look structure will feature a policy ministry as well as operational arms, some of which have already been introduced,” the ministry said. “The re-engineering, which is being done through the Education System Transformation Programme, is aimed at achieving a more effective, more efficient and a more accountable education system.”
Also, plans to address teacher quality, the performance of schools, as well as, capacity building for educational leaders, should be addressed in the broadcast the ministry said.
