Man with ganja in groin among two arrested at airport

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A Clarendon woman and a Manchester man were on Sunday arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport after ganja was found strapped to their bodies.

The two, who are unrelated, checked in to flights destined to other Caribbean countries around 3:40 pm and were both held during pre-board screening.

They are 32-year-old Keneisha Powell of Sylvester Street in May Pen, Clarendon and Deon Elvey, a 48-year-old architect of Bonito Crescent in Manchester.

Both have been charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, taking steps to export ganja and conspiracy to export ganja.

According to police reports, Powell checked-in to board a flight to Barbados and during a search at the security checkpoint police found that she had several parcels of ganja strapped to her body. The drug weighed about 2.25 pounds.

Similarly, Elvey, who was destined for St Lucia, was searched when the lawmen noticed irregular objects wrapped in masking tape in his groin area. After opening the parcels it was discovered that they contained ganja. The police did not disclose its weight or street value.

Elvey and Powell are to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on August 29 and August 30 respectively.
