Typewriter set to make seasonal entry
Former horse of the year Typewriter — Derby winner and frequent winner of the vaunted Supertakes — is expected to make his first competitive entry on the racetrack on Saturday, September 24.
Rated by many pundits over the last 10 years as one of the country’s leading thoroughbreds, Typewriter (Western Classic —Doc’s Paladin) has been dogged during his racing career by a series of injuries to one of his hooves, and this has severely hampered his raceday participation. He last raced on December 26, 2015, when he finished third behind Perfect Neighbour and Long Running Train in the 12-furlong Harry Jackson Memorial Cup. This was after finishing second behind Seeking My Dream in the inaugural staging of the Diamond Mile on December 5, 2015.
Typewriter‘s trainer Spencer Chung says that if his charge maintains a high level of fitness, he will probably start in an Overnight Allowance event on September 24 over six and a half furlongs.
“He (Typewriter) has been coming along steadily at exercise in the mornings, and if he continues to stay healthy, I am definitely looking to start him in an Overnight Allowance event on September 24,” Chung confirmed for the Complete Racing Guide.
“Although Typewriter is rated as one of the top horses around at this time, because he has not raced for such a long time, he is now eligible to race at the Overnight Allowance level.
“Of course, his progress will be monitored very closely, so at this time for us it’s about ensuring that Typewriter is fit and ready to make his seasonal bow, and after that I will make an assessment and take it from there.
“Certainly, there is anticipation, but more will be known when he races,” Chung said.
Typewriter won the most coveted race on the local calendar – the Jamaica Derby — in 2012, defeating All Correct and Uncle Donny.
