Brawn takes Caymanas feature in fine style
After a superb stretch run, the Gary Subratie-trained Brawn, under a brilliant ride from in form jockey Aaron Chatrie, powered past rivals against the inside rails to win the Saint Cecelia Cup feature in fine style at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The dark bay American-bred colt, who went off as a 6-1 betting option in the field of 10 good-quality runners, won the Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward over 1,300 metres by one-anda- quarter lengths, going away in a quick 1:17.1 minutes, behind splits of 23.1, 48.0 and 1:10.2 minutes.
Owned by Michros, Brawn was off to his usual slow start and raced among the backmarkers behind the early pace set by Force De Jour (Bebeto Harvey up), Campesino (Linton Steadman astride) and Sir Budget (Anthony Thomas aboard) leaving the six-furlong marker.
As the runners made their way past the half mile and headed towards the home bend, Campesino took over the lead from a battling Force De Jour, with company breathing down his neck, while Brawn steadily began to round horses, still with a lot of ground to cover on the leaders.
When all seemed lost turning for home, Chatrie produced his mount on the inside rails and Brawn found extra and got up in time for an emphatic victory, his fourth for the season from 16 starts with earnings in excess of $2.5 million.
A well-ridden Dreamcometrue (Jemar Jackson), at odds of 16-1, ran her heart out to finish a clear second. She was three lengths of 2-1 joint second-favourite Phineas (Wesley Henry up), who nipped Campesino for third place.
The ultra-talented filly Nuclear Affair, who was up with pace for the first furlong and half, faded badly and finished second to last. Meanwhile, Superluminal continued to show good form when he scored a two-and-three-quarter length over Raging Prospect and Miracle Star in the Kenneth Mattis OD Memorial Trophy co-feature.
Trained by Ian Parsard and ridden by Paul Francis, Superluminal ran 2,000 metres in a career best 2:07.0 minutes.
Also on the 10-race programme, the Wayne DaCosta-trained Dreamliner, under Omar Walker, won the Nasatol Trophy over 1,000 metres straight in a decent 57.1 seconds.
Racing continues next Saturday with the running of the Governor General’s Stakes which features Horse of the Year Seeking My Dream, last year’s winner Perfect Neighbour and last year’s Superstakes hero Franfield.
The race is over 2000 metres. Also, former two-time Superstakes winner Typewriter is scheduled to make his seasonal debut.
