‘Action’ vintage show on Saturday
INAUGURAL vintage concert Action For Charity is slated for Fab 5 Headquarters, 11 Springvale Avenue, Kingston 10, on Saturday.
The event, conceptualised by Germany-based Action Speak Louder Than Words in association with Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes & Affiliates (JAVAA), was launched at Printware Online Jamaica Limited on Hagley Park Road in Kingston yesterday.
Action Speak Louder Than Words President Jan Groeppel said the event, while showcasing Jamaica’s rich talent, has a worthy cause at its core.
“People love Jamaica’s vintage music in Germany and are willing to pay huge sums of money for old-time vinyl records. But what we found out is that many of these veteran acts, despite that they’re still able to perform, are sidelined and nobody cares for them and they die in poverty… That’s very unjust,” Groepell, president of Action Speak Loud Than Word, told the Jamaica Observer.
“So, the money we collect at the gate (from the concert) will be redistributed to some of these acts,” he continued.
Slated to perform are The Mighty Diamonds, Boris Gardiner, The Heptones, The Silvertones, Bagga Case (Home T), Fab 5, Bongo Herman, and Charmaine Limonious.
The show will also be streamed live to a venue in Oberhausen, Germany, where a vintage sound system concert will be in full effect. Headlining that event is British selector Tiny T and the Might Cloudburst.
JAVAA executive and Fab 5 guitarist Frankie Campbell said he was pleased with the initiative.
“One of the spin-offs from the event is that it could revive the careers of many of these (vintage) artistes, many of whom still sound good and are still relevant. We at JAVAA believe in preserving the musical heritage of Jamaica,” said Campbell.
The Silvertones member Keith Coley was elated about the gig.
“I feel great because big things are gonna happen… Patrons should expect a good performance from The Silvertones. We will be doing two new songs… It will be a great show,” said Coley.
Formed in 1964, the trio is known for songs including True Confession, Midnight Hour, and Rejoice Jah Jah Children.
