MONTEGO BAY, St James — Two matches featuring clashes between unbeaten teams will highlight today’s round of matches in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition.

Former champions St James High and Cornwall College will meet in Zone A at Jarrett Park in one game, while Manchester High and Mile Gully meet in Mandeville in a Zone F game.

Each of the four schools has won their first four games and appear headed to the inter-zone round, and the winners of today’s games could get an advantage in the race for zone honours.

Also today, seven schools will be seeking to extend their perfect winning runs as the first round ends for some while the return round will commence in some zones.

Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will still be smarting from their loss to Lacovia High on Thursday as they host arch-rival Munro College in Santa Cruz.

Cornwall College lead Zone A on goal difference and have a four-game unbeaten run against their cross-town rivals who are yet to concede a goal.

Both games last year ended in draws as St James went on to win the zone and got as far as the quarter-finals.

Coach Theodore Whitmore has cleared out a number of his top players who were eligible to return this year but he still has goalkeeper Aian Miller, one of the best in the competition and who could make the difference between the teams.

Tyrique Clarke is their leading scorer with four goals and he is expected to give the Cornwall College defence some work.

Led by National Under-20 striker Jourdaine Fletcher, who has scored in every game he has played in so far, Cornwall have scored 13 goals and seem not to have got out of first gear.

A lot will be at stake today, however, and the expected large turnout could be in for a treat.

Manchester High have had the measure of Mile Gully who they beat 4-0 and 5-0 last year; they have dominated them over the years and will seek to continue the trend today.

On paper Manchester High appear to have the edge as they have scored 18 goals in their four games played, while Mile Gully have managed just seven against the same teams, but are yet to concede a goal.

Meanwhile former champions Vere Technical, who will be going after their sixth straight win, will be taking a perfect win record into today’s round of matches.

Vere Technical, who are enjoying their best season in years, will host Bustamante High — who they beat 1-0 in the first round — in their Zone N game at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes.

Clarendon College have won their four games played in Zone H so far and will face Knox College, who they had beaten 5-1 in the first round.

Dinthill Technical have cruised in Zone K, winning all four games played, scoring 16 goals, and could extend their lead as they take on second-placed Ewarton High, who are on nine points.

Rusea’s High will be well-rested for their game against Knockalva Technical to close out the first round and should get the better of the school that has conceded 12 goals in their two games played, including eight against Green Island on Tuesday.

Garvey Maceo High, Port Antonio High and Paul Bogle will also seek to extend their winning runs.

In Santa Cruz, STETHS will hope to rebound from their loss on Thursday when they host Munro who are on a two-game winning run.

Form is usually thrown out the window when these two rivals meet and the champions are hoping to avoid back-to-back losses but have scored just three goals in three games since they drubbed Black River High 10-1 in the opening game two weeks ago.

Munro are coming off a big 6-1 win on Thursday and will be confident of overturning STETHS on their own grounds.
