St James, Dinthill, Garvey Maceo remain perfect

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Three former champions, St James High, Dinthill Technical and Garvey Maceo, extended their winning records to six straight in their return-round games in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition yesterday.

Cornwall College stayed on top in Zone A with a 4-0 win over Anchovy High, Dinthill Technical beat Bog Walk High 2-0 in Zone K, while Garvey Maceo edged Porus High 1-0 in Zone M.

Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) meanwhile increased their lead in Zone E with a 3-0 win over Black River High, as the other two games ended in draws. Manchester High and Mile Gully are still tied in Zone F after contrasting wins yesterday, while there were big wins for former champions Frome Technical and Glenmuir High.

At Cornwall College, doubles from Jourdaine Fletcher and Peter-Lee Vassell led them over Anchovy High as they improved to 18 points ahead of St James High, who rebounded from their 0-3 loss to Cornwall College on Saturday with a 6-0 blanking of Maldon High at Jarrett Park.

Eighth grader Tyreque Clarke scored a hat-trick to lead St James High, taking his scoring tally to seven goals this season.

Irwin High scored their first win in the competition since the 2011 season when they beat Green Pond 3-1 in Zone A, with Andre Tate, Nicholas Pusey and Kemar Brown getting the goals.

Alwayne Harvey scored his sixth goal and Kahreen Parris got the other as Dinthill Technical continued their good run, brushing aside Bog Walk.

Garvey Maceo stayed ahead in Zone M with a 1-0 win over Porus High to move to 18 points, while Glenmuir High stayed in second with an 8-0 drubbing of Foga Road, and Denbigh High were 6-0 winners over Winston Jones.

Demar James scored twice and Jovoney Brown scored his seventh goal for STETHS in their win over hapless Black River High in Zone E and improved to 15 points, four more than second-placed Lacovia, who drew 1-1 with Maggotty High, while Newell High and Munro College also ended 1-1.

Brandon Brown scored twice to lead Manchester High to a 6-2 win over Cross Keys in Zone F, but Mile Gully also won, edging deCarteret College 1-0, while Andre Castle scored a hat-trick for BB Coke in their 6-0 win over Belair High.

Jermaine Lindo scored four times for Frome Technical in their 7-0 trouncing of Knockalva Technical in the lone Zone B game as they improved to seven points, behind leaders Rusea’s High on nine points.

The competition continues with 23 games today and former champions Clarendon College could improve to six straight wins in Zone H when they play away to Edwin Allen, who they had beaten 4-0 in the first round.

Clarendon College have steam-rolled the competition in Zone H scoring 27 goals in their five wins so far while conceding just one in the process.

St Mary High, on 13 points, could move to within a few points of securing their spot in the Inter-zone round from Zone J with a win over Brimmer Vale High today.

In Zone C, leaders Spot Valley High and Cedric Titus could create more space between the rest of the group with wins over a fading Herbert Morrison and Holland High, respectively.

Both are on 11 points with Spot Valley having a game in hand, against Holland, who they beat 4-0 on Monday.

Petersfield High, a quarter-finalist last year, are in an almost must-win situation when they take on Zone D leaders Godfrey Stewart at home.

Godfrey Stewart lead with 15 points and a second win over Petersfield this season in today’s game would all but wrap up an Inter-zone spot for them and leave Petersfield High, on seven points, in deep trouble.

Surprise second-placed team Little London, on 12 points, would give themselves some breathing space with a win over Grange Hill at Belle Isle.

In Zone G, fresh off their win over Holmwood Technical on Monday, Alston High will be on the hunt for back-to-back big scalps when they take on leaders Spalding High seeking to avenge a 0-4 loss at home in the first round.

Alston High are tied in second place with Holmwood Technical, both on 12 points, three behind Spalding, all from six games played as the group looks to become a three-team race for two automatic spots.

Holmwood are at home to Bellefield whom they had beaten 3-0 in the first round.
