Barbican, GC Foster for women’s KO final
GC Foster College FC stunned Waterhouse FC 2-1 to reach the final of the Jamaica Football Federation/SDF Women’s KO in a semi-final double-header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Saturday.
Waterhouse were first to score in minute 45 +1 through Shanel Spence, but GC Foster College, who looked the better team, rallied with goals from Abby Ohara (71st) and Keneshia Ferron (83rd-minute penalty).
They will contest the 2016 women’s football final against defending champions Barbican FC, who had earlier defeated Los Perfectos of Manchester 3-1 in the curtain-raiser.
To reach their second-consecutive women’s final Barbican repeated last year’s victory against Los Perfectos, while G C Foster turned the tables on Waterhouse, who got by them on penalty kicks in last year’s semi-final round.
Both Barbican and Waterhouse, who dominated their opponents in last year’s play, looked less like themselves this season as both Los Perfectos and GC Foster looked better prepared for battle in this year’s renewal. So much so, that the Charles Edwards-coached Barbican had to call on his star players to come to terms with the much improved play from their Manchester rivals, especially in the first half when they looked foreboding .
Barbican, however, took the lead in minute 24 after Tashana Vincent slipped behind the Los Perfectos defence to settle the nerves of their edgy supporters.
On the stroke of half-time, Los Perfectos drew level when national livewire striker Venecia ‘String Bean’ Reid poked the ball home after rounding goalkeeper Abbigale Palmer.
Barbican returned for the second half with fresh legs and went ahead when skipper Alicia James hit a deafening free kick from 20 yards that flew under the crossbar to make it 2-1.
Barbican substitute Kenesha Reid, whose impact was immediately felt after entering play, struck a wonderful goal-bound shot, which opposing skipper Sashalee Cooper could only help across the goal line for a Barbican third goal in the 67th minute.
Barbican coach Edwards said he was not bothered when the opponents equalised, always confident that his charges would come back to win.
“I thought it was a very interesting game. Los Perfectos came out very determined and looked as though they wanted to take the game from us, but we knew that they were not as fit as we are and the conditions would have been a problem for them,” he said.
Los Perfectos coach Wayne James conceded that superior fitness of Barbican players separated the teams in the main.
“It was an even game up to 50 to 60 minutes, but the fitter, better and more organised team beat us in the end,” he said.
James had high praises for top striker Venecia Reid, who threw his team a lifeline with a late first-half equaliser.
“String Bean is one of the better women players in Jamaica whose technique is great, whose determined effort is exemplary, and as always, she gave her every effort on a hot and humid day,” he said.
