In an highly competitive match Boys’ Town FC clipped newcomers Jamalco FC 1-0 to secure their first victory in the 2016/2017 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season at Barbican Complex yesterday.

The lone goal came from the right boot of striker Shamar Nicholson in the seventh minute of play.

With the victory Boys’ Town earned their first three points of the competition, are tied with Harbour View in 10th position, while Jamalco, who were the leaders, slipped to fourth position on nine points. Harbour View were scheduled to face the winless Waterhouse FC at home at 7:00 pm yesterday.

Boys’ Town Coach Andrew Price said that it was a welcome victory for the ‘Red Brigade as their quest is to make it into the top six at the end of preliminary rounds.

“I think the team showed a lot of character today (yesterday). They really played hard to secure us the victory. I felt that we defended well and one of the things that we asked the team to do before the start of the game was to keep a clean sheet and they did that.

“One goal was good enough and Shamar (Nicholson) got a lot of chances, he could have probably got a hat-trick with a little more luck, but the three points were very important for us and I hope that it is a turn for the better for Boys’ Town,” Price told the

Jamaica Observer.

His opposite number Rayon Johnson said that it is back to the drawing board for his team.

“We are a quality team, but we fell short today (yesterday). We just have to go back home, train and look at what we did wrong, and fix up the areas we need to sharpen up on and look at the way forward,” he said.

It was a tame start for both teams as they failed to hold possession of the ball in the early exchanges of the contest. But after five minutes of play, Boys’ Town began to show more composure and eventually went ahead from a beautiful strike from Nicholson from inside the 18-yard box that gave Levar Williams no chance.

It took nearly half-hour before Jamalco could get themselves into the game when Rohan Richards almost drew them level in the 29th minutes, but his long-range shot from about 30 yards out was pushed over the crossbar by Kirk Porter in goal.

Akeem Henry got an even better opportunity for the visitors, but he had to watch his strike from in front of goal fly over the crossbar in the 30th minute.
