KINGSTON, Jamaica — Leader of the Opposition People’s National Party, Portia Simpson Miller, yesterday commenced a series of consultations with critical stakeholders of the party.

According to a news release from the party, the first meeting was with the leadership of the National Worker’s Union (NWU), one of the affiliates of the 78-year-old political organisation.

Simpson Miller said that the meetings are designed to rebuild and improve the relationship with the critical stakeholders of the PNP so that there is greater unity and understanding of each other.

The NWU was formed by former president of the PNP, Norman Manley, as a means of mobilising and organising workers in the country. The NWU has membership on the National Executive Council and the Executive Committee of the PNP as a means of consolidating and maintaining a strong relationship between the two institutions.

According to Simpson Miller, “It is extremely important that both the PNP and the NWU maintain a very strong relationship because when the NWU is strong, the PNP is strong.”

She stated that the converse is also true, “When the PNP is strong, the NWU is strong.”

At the meeting, the NWU reportedly raised a number of issues relating to its organisation and the PNP and the decision was taken for regular meetings to be held between the two institutions to continue the dialogue on strengthening their relationship.
