Big races highlight programme dedicated to trainers

Perennial as the grass, the Jamaica Racehorse Trainers’ Association Trophy will highlight another Jamaica Racehorse Trainers’ Association (JRTA) Race Day at Caymanas Park today, with an absorbing 11-race card.

As is expected, the JRTA will continue to honour trainers who have contributed significantly to the mise en scenes of the Sport of Kings at the park with races honouring their names, among them top-producing trainer Wayne DaCosta en route to copping his 16th trainer’s title.

Also carded is the staple Seymour “Foggy” Mullings OJ, CD Trophy, along with the Dye Job Sprint for native-bred and imported two-year-olds, and the Vincent Edwards OD Trophy.

Tensang Chung, Arnold Rambally Jr, Patrick Lynch, Patrick Fong, Louis Richards and Joseph Thomas are the other trainers in whose honour races will be run.

While the programme is about honouring trainers with races in their names, the 1,200-metre Dye Job Sprint that opens the programme at 11:45 am should be taken as the most important race on the programme in that a number of likely runners heading into the final leg of the Supreme Ventures Limited Two-Year-Old “Triple” Series — the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes carded for Boxing Day on December 27 — will have their final race in preparation for the big day.

The Dye Job Sprint will provide useful viewing exercise for trainers of Armageddon and Mr Universe, two likely prospects to compete — albeit for the minor shares — with their stablemate She’s A Maneater trained by Wayne DaCosta, expected to start as the overwhelming favourite.

Both Armageddon, the mount of Jevvanne Erwin, and Mr Universe, straddled by Omar Walker, have worked industriously and should perform creditably in the blowout race to position themselves and help flesh out the Boxing Day contest.

Money Magnet, who also failed to fire in the second Pick3 Super Challenge Trophy, should now be a more-readied article to offer the challenge that is expected of her with the leading apprentice Bebeto Harvey remaining her guide.

Bilingual, trained by Anthony Nunes and a stablemate of the far-striding Sotomayer, looks to have a bit more difficulty here in making it two from two, even with improvement following a storm-gathering victory over the 1,100 metres on debut.

True Whisper, trained by Steven Todd for owner Garth Samuels, was fairly impressive when opening with a win over the distance the second time of asking. Since then, she has looked waspish in her preparation, and should thisHe’stherealthing filly perform as well as her exercise reports suggest, then she could put down a very promising run here.

The second of two two-year-old races on the card to be run in honour of the leading trainer, Wayne DaCosta OD has attracted a much larger field of 10 starters — three of whom are debutants going 1,000 metres straight.

These are maidens and of the seasoned campaigners, Nuclear Commander, Classic Man, Silver Rocket and Silence should be the leading contenders to take the event, while amongst debutants, are trainer Richard Azan’s Tuxedo, Colin Blair’s Atomic Prince and Empress Hall, trained by Patrick Lynch to decide the outcome.

Meanwhile, the JRTA Trophy will bring the 11-race card to a close at approximately 5:00 pm.

The native-bred three-year-olds only call for NW2 lifetime has attracted a full field of 16, going 1,200 metres for a purse of $768,000.

Despite the large field competing, only a few look to be in with a chance. The lightly weighted Sweet Destiny, trained by Michael McIntosh; Miss Myrtle, trained by Patrick Fong with Wesley Henry up; a fit-looking Urban Principal, owned and trained by Patrick Lynch, along with his Executive Charm with Jerome Innis in the tack, are among those who will enjoy the distance.

Proud President, trained by Andrew McDonald with Bebeto Harvey astride, Union Four, trained by Paul Hylton with Paul Francis up, and the top-weighted Lucky Nine to be partnered by Dane Nelson, are also expected to run well over the course.

The penultimate call for the Seymour “Foggy” Mullings OJ CD Trophy will also provide quality racing entertainment among a group of three-year-olds and upward, imported three-year-olds and upward, NW3 lifetime, and native-bred three-year-olds going 1,600 metres in a field of 10 declared.

Here a number of useful runners, who are waiting in the wings for an opportunity to break free from non-winners of two, will compete for the major slice of the $768,000 purse on offer. Among the most potent runners included are the consistent Bird Catcher, the ultra-consistent Will In Charge, Brooklyn, who just chalked up back-to-back wins in a matter of 10 days apart in November, after being a neck-length second in her previous start, and the recent winner, Crown Princess.
