Douglas Burke tennis series ends with many titles shared

Douglas Burke tennis series ends with many titles shared

SEVERAL players were joint winners in the 2016 Supligen/Serge Douglas Burke Doubles Tennis Tournament that ended at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Piccadilly Road on Sunday.

Mario Campbell and Alex Chin were the only two players that won their respective age-groups outright. Campbell won the boys’ 18 and under doubles series with 45 points, while Chin captured the 14 and under boys with a maximum of 40 points.

The girls’ 18 and under doubles series was shared among four players – Michaela Stephens, Shea-Ann Kameka, Kobi Wilcott and Selena Blythe – who all ended with 40 points each.

Matthew Wright and Joshua Haye were joint winners of the boys’ 14 and under series as they both accumulated 45 points each.

Matthew Bromwell and Daniel Wright were joint winners of the boys’ 10 and under doubles series by amassing 60 points each.

The Girls’ Open Dot Ball doubles series was shared between Jessica Gentles and Alessia Freckleton, who both finished with 60 points each.

Meanwhile, in the fourth and final tournament in the series on Sunday, the second-seeded pair of Mario Campbell and Gregory Spencer of Wolmer’s Boys’ defeated the number one pair of Jonathan Golding and Miguel Rose in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Campbell and Spencer had won last month’s doubles.

In the semi-finals, Campbell and Spencer had beaten Carlos Wilson and Milton Rose 8-5, while Golding and Rose knocked out Jordan Lightbody and Romeo Edwards 8-5.

Top pair Michaela Stephenson and Shea-Ann Kameka defeated the second-seeded pair of Selena Blythe and Kobi Wilcott 6-1, 6-3 to win the girls’ 18 and under doubles crown.

In the semi-finals, Stephens and Kameka beat Alicia Pairman and Gabrielle Bernard 6-0, while Wilcott and Blythe knocked away Kailey Chin and Kemilia Pusey 6-1.

The unseeded pair of Jonathon Millwood and Russell Fairman produced two upsets win when they defeated the top pair of Nathan Chin and Jordan Vaz 8-1 to win the boys’ 14 and under doubles title, while knocking out the second pair of Ryan Muir and Joshua Graveney 6-4 in the semi-finals.

Gabrielle Steele and Eva Pinchas emerged winners of the girls’ 12 and under Dot Ball doubles round-robin final with Kalila Morris and Vee Jahnae Maye finishing second.

Haye won the boys’ 12 and under Dot Ball round-robin final by finishing first, with Stewart Gaynor and Cruz Kow coming in second.

The Girls’ Open Dot Ball final was won by the pair of Jessica Gentles and Alessia Freckleton, who defeated the pair of Britnay Bennett and Genisis Johnson 4-3, 3-4, 7-5 (tie-breaker).

Matthew Bromwell and Daniel Wright beat Savannah Turner and Xenya Miller-Brown 4-3 to win the 10 and under unisex doubles final.
