Under-21 Suns upset Humming Birds in Elite League
UNDER-21 Suns pulled off an upset by defeating former champions Kingston Humming Birds 30-27 as the 2017 Berger Elite Netball League continued at the Leila Robinson Courts on Monday evening.
The win pushed the Conrad Parkes-coached Under-21 aggregation to joint third position with Humming Birds, both on nine points each. However, the Under-21 have played only five games to the Birds’ six.
Leading the scoring for the Suns were Simone Gordon with 16 goals from 22 attempts, and Captain Hasana Williams with 14 goals from 26 efforts. For the Humming Birds, Tristina Harwood got 18 from 26 and Kera Christie eight from 13 attempts. The quarterly scores for the Suns were 8-7, 13-15 (half-time), 20-21 and went onto clinch the match 30-27.
Meanwhile, St Ann Orchids defeated the Manchester Spurs 49-34 to chalk up their fifth win from six outings and, in the process, joined St Catherine Racers on 15 points each. This was Spurs’ second loss from five starts.
The Orchids led throughout all four quarters and were never in trouble as they easily came out comfortable winners. Quarterly scores for the Orchids were 12-3, 22-11 (half-time), 35-21 before winning convincingly 49-34.
For the Orchids, Sabrina Spence scored 31 goals from 39 attempts and Captain Simone Forbes had 18 goals from 21 attempts. For the losers, Rebecah Robinson got 15 goals from 25 tries, Captain Crystal Grant got 10 from 13, and Stephanie Anderson nine from 18 efforts.
The Berger Elite Netball League continues today with the Under-21 Suns taking on St James Sharpes at 6:00 pm, while defending champions Clarendon Gaters face Manchester Spurs at 7:30 pm.
