Taxi man gets 2 years after lying in insurance claim
ST ANDREW, Jamaica — A 35-year-old taxi operator was today sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of conspiracy to defraud, and attempting to obtain money by false pretense.
According to a release from the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) the taxi driver, Headley Thomas, otherwise called “Ian” of Boone Hall, St Andrew, was involved in a motor vehicle accident along Constant Spring Road in September 2015 and at the time of the accident told the police that he was the only one travelling in the vehicle.
However, he later told a prominent insurance company that family members were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident, attempting to defraud it of $4 million.
The insurance company reportedly investigated and found that no passenger was in the vehicle.
The company reported the matter to MOCA and Thomas was arrested and charged during a pre-dawn operation at his home in June 2016.
