Mt Alvernia take two straight wins in Western Con basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Mt Alvernia High made it two wins from two starts in the ISSA Western Conference Girls’ basketball competition after beating cross-town rivals Montego Bay High 42-18 at Mt Alvernia High on Monday.
After their opening win over Muschett High last week, Mt Alvernia High are now leaders with four points, two more than Holland High, who beat defending champions Rhodes Hall High 42-15, also at Mt Alvernia High on Monday.
Mt Alvernia took full advantage of a slow-starting Montego Bay High and led 12-0 after the first quarter, then were up 15-6 at half-time, before outscoring Montego Bay High 27-12 over the second half of the game.
Christine Clennon and Tiana Wilson both scored seven points each to lead Mt Alvernia, while Shernice Evelyn scored six points.
Trinity-Jade Anderson was the top scorer for Montego Bay High with five points, including a three-pointer, while Shanya Connell and Tina-Shay Jeminson, both scored four points each.
In the first game, Holland High dominated last year’s winners, with Zhane Lawrence scoring 18 points, while Tatiana Fagan scored eight points and Kimone Thompson six points.
Rodene Morris scored eight points and had seven steals for Rhodes Hall, while Keron Brown scored seven points and had 10 steals.
