UPDATE: Authorities begin releasing UK deportees
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Government officials have begun releasing deportees from the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Mobile Reserve headquarters following the completion of paper works.
The United Kingdom today returned 32 Jamaicans to the island on a chartered flight.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Devon Watkis told journalists at a briefing this afternoon that some had comitted drug-related offences, while others breached immigration laws. He said the authorities were expecting a greater number of deportees.
Of the 32 people, only six were women. The police began releasing them about 4:20 pm.
In addition to the JCF, agencies involved in processing the deportees are: the Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA) and non-governmental organisations, which will see to the welfare issues of deportees with no family here.
