Spotted! Sasha Gates

Who… Sasha Gates,WAGS, reality TV star and wife of American football player Antonio Gates

Where… The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain, Trinidad

The scoop… I brought my babies for the first time, and I introduced a few people to my culture for an unforgettable first-time experience. I always love being in Trinidad! Carnival keeps me sane; the people are unique and the food and soca are special. The island is where I find my centre and peace. I’m always sad to leave.

Post-Carnival, and I’m still humming…Technically by Farmer Nappy & Destra

I’m Canadian-born with Trini roots… Both my parents are from Trinidad. I now live and work in California. I loved growing up in Toronto because of its diversity and it seems like people hold onto their roots there. I was raised in a community of Trinidadians and many other people from the Caribbean. I’ve been visiting Trinidad since birth. My mother is Spanish and black and my father is black Chinese and Indian.

A

s soon as I touch down in Trinidad… I find a doubles man and order two of them to eat! I then head to the beach right away to soak in the Caribbean Sea.

On WAGS… Reality TV is for your entertainment. It’s hard to really give someone’s real life story in just a few episodes, so only certain events are highlighted. The most drama-filled is what you’ll usually see. Most people watch TV for drama and excitement and a lot of scenes are a true depiction of what’s happening in our lives.

On landing the role… Machete Productions reached out to me. I left entertainment alone to be a mother and wife and it came knocking on my door again. It was very scary committing and I was sceptical about opening my front door to the world. Is it the devil knocking or something I’m supposed to do for a greater purpose down the road? You never know until you take a chance. I made the decision to do it instead of never knowing. So far, it’s been an interesting experience. I definitely feel that the show has given me a voice.

On balancing marriage, children and career… I think, as women, we just find the time. No matter what life throws our way, we somehow make a way to get it all done. It isn’t always easy and being a mother always will come first, but I am grateful that I have a wonderful support system at home that allows me to play so many roles. For all my fellow moms out there, lean on those around you for support and the more organised you are, the better. I have a calendar that I rely on for everything: what is going on in my kids’ lives, my husband’s, my own and that is my saving grace. I think what is most important is not to lose track of what is important to you, what makes you happy. Life gets busy, but be sure to take time out of the week and enjoy something that makes you happy.

On my Caribbean roots… My mother moved to Canada before I was born, independent and fearless. She created a life for her children, and I watched her wear many different hats. I chose to be just like her. We are a strong, beautiful and fearless people with an amazing culture. I’ve learned to cook great food and wine to soca! I’m filled with so much pride to have Caribbean roots.

To a five-year-old Sasha… Appreciate all cultures, respect everyone and know that no one defines who you are but God.

And to a ‘tween watching Sasha on TV and wanting her life… Never lose sight of who you are; learn to love yourself and don’t let society define you.

On women eyeing her celebrity partner… It doesn’t bother me. I’m flattered that many want what belongs me. I believe and trust in my husband. Trust is key. I’m also secure in the woman I am and know that I’m doing my duty as a wife and mother. If I felt like something was lacking on my end, then maybe I’d be worried.

Carnival travel essentials… Sunblock, comfortable shoes, stockings, glitter and glue.

Beauty essentials… Lip gloss, blush, cheekbone highlighter and perfume.

My go-to designers are… YSL, Balmain, Cushnie et Ochs, IRO, Alexander Wang, Vince, Dior, Stella McCartney, Rag and Bone,

Celine, Versace, Thomas Wylde & RtA Brand.

Favourite pastime… The beach, the gym, a good movie or a nap.

Top five guests for a dinner party… It’s hard to leave anyone out. We have our differences and don’t always get along but I really do love them all for different reasons. Nicole, Barbie, Natalie, Olivia and Autumn would be my top five because they are the original cast and I’ve got to know them from the start!

The next five years will see me… still living life to its fullest!
