Kingston mayor lauds Magnum New Rules but expresses concern about disorder
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams has lauded the execution of the Magnum New Rules concert, which was held at the National Stadium car park on Saturday.
In a release today, Williams commended the artistes, sponsors and promoters involved with the event.
The concert, headlined by dancehall artiste Alkaline, featured other top acts like Shaggy, Mavado, Tarrus Riley, I-Octane and Jahmiel.
Williams praised the event, saying: “As a creative city of music, we ought to encourage more events such as these which will boost the city’s economic activity, attract tourists and build the entertainment industry on a whole”.
He also saluted promoters for the choice to keep the lyrics clean, which he said was refreshing, and a standard to be maintained for events within the city.
The mayor, however, highlighted concerns about security and order at the event.
“We have to put reasonable measures in place to mitigate any possible harm to patrons as well as to maintain order. The energy of such events often times lead to stampedes due to the calibre of performances and popularity of artistes,” Williams said.
When Alkaline took the stage after 3:00 am, fans uprooted the fence separating the VIP and general sections, causing a stampede.
He called on promoters to have dialogue with the city officials and the police to mitigate the occurrence of such disorder.
