Samuda to give corned beef-ban update tomorrow
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Karl Samuda is scheduled to give a press briefing tomorrow at 11:00 am to update the nation on the ban on the import and sale of Brazilian corned beef.
The ministry imposed a ban on the import of corned beef from Brazil after an emergency meeting on March 20.
The “immediate” ban came after reports from Brazilian authorities that several major Brazilian meat processors had been “selling rotten beef and poultry”.
Consumers were urged not to purchase the product and local distributors withdrew corned beef from their shelves.
According to the ministry, Brazil supplies 99.5 per cent of the corned beef on the local market.
