Property tax debate delayed
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Debate on two property tax Bills, which was scheduled for the House of Representatives today, has been postponed.
Minister of Education Youth and Information, Senator Ruel Reid, confirmed last light that the debate on the Bills would await a final Cabinet decision.
He said that a provisional collection of tax order would be instituted in the meantime, in light of the order issued by Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Audley Shaw, for the new rates to become effective on April 1.
This followed a decision by the Cabinet last night, after lengthy discussions on the issues raised regarding the effect of the increases on property owners, to appoint a sub-committee to assess and evaluate the concerns and report back to the Cabinet by tomorrow.
The two bills which were scheduled for debate today are: “An Act to Amend the Property tax Act”, and “An Act to Amend the Land Valuation Act”.
